Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous is a mixture of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen and used for conscious sedation. Nitrous is a means of inhalation sedation with no 'after effects' after procedure's end. Conscious sedation is used in helping a patient relax and less anxious during a dental visit. Modern delivery devices all have 'fail-safe' built in with a set minimal amount of Oxygen delivery, thus ensuring that there is never a time when less than the required amount of Oxygen is being used or available.
The use of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen inhalation sedation does not necessarily mean that local anesthetics (numbing) is still not needed or required for restorative care; but the conscious sedative qualities of the Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen does allow for a more relaxed and in many cases more comfortable dental experience.
